Come see how Gunnison became to be, why it was so important to the railroads, lay-out of the two railyards, and history, photos, and interwiews from folks who lived trought this golden age.

One of a fourteen film serious showing photos and film footage of the narrow gauge operations that took place between 1871 to 1955. This film talks about the forming of the Denver & Rio Grande and Denver, South Park, & Pacific Railroads, and the race between them to reach Gunnison, Colorado, for the rights-of-way to build their rail lines to Salt Lake City, and claim the shipping rights for the mining boom of the area.
The fourth film, in a series of fourteen films about the rail operations in the Gunnison, Colorado area. This film covers the rail lines that traveled from Crested Butte to Anthracite, along Slate River, Crested Butte, over Kebler to Foresta, and the equipment used to keep these lines open during the harsh Colorado winters.

"Deep Blue Sea" is the 5th film from Russy Baby Productions about the Gunnison railroad operations.  In this film, we travel from Gunnison, Colorado, west to the four towns now hidden below Colorado's largest body of water, the Blue Mesa Reservoir.

It was 1881, when the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad reached Gunnison, Colorado, and the eyes of the railroad were on Crested Butte, and the rich coal fields of bituminous and anthracite coal that were located there.

   25 miles west of Gunnison, and 36 miles between Sapinero and Lake City, with 1,000-foot high walls through the brutal Lake Fork Canyon, this is where the Lake City Branch would travel between 1889, to 1937 when the rails were removed.

Lake Fork Junction is where the rails spurred to the south, towards the riches of Lake City, and Hinsdale County, along the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River.

  A vital connection between the gold mines and mills of the San Juan’s, and the smelters of Leadville, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison was also one of the principal attractions of the “Around the Circle” passenger tours of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, that attracted a large number of riders.
   Travel back in time as we explore the railroad operations of the Denver & Rio Grande through the Black Canyon, and take a look at the changes that have taken place after the removal of the rails in 1949. Enjoy film footage, photos, and interviews from Dr. George Sibley, Dr. Duane Vandenbusche, Gene Mason, and others, in this first of three films that we are making about the Majestic Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
